And their idea for the follow-up was to take all that away and put the player into a similarly fictionalized version of sunny Miami, with upbeat 80's rock on the radio, gorgeous pink sunsets, and palm trees. Sure, Rockstar had the world's most popular game by a good country mile, but the previous GTA games were all tied together by their setting: A fictionalized version of New York, with seedy slums, diseased hookers, and a life of crime that pervaded every piss-stinking nook and cranny. It's important to not forget just how risky a move this was.
Another bold move? It takes place in the 1980s.
